The most important function of chin hyaluronic acid is to improve the proportions of the side profile. Most people care a lot about their nasal root and nasolabial folds, but a chin with the right proportions can take your whole face shape to an A+.

'Dr. Ou, my profile looks like I have no chin, and in photos there is no jawline. What can I do?'

What you are missing is actually chin hyaluronic acid.

How Many cc of Hyaluronic Acid for the Chin? The Short Answer

Depending on how far the chin recedes, 2–3cc of chin hyaluronic acid is recommended, and it should not all be placed at the chin tip. The standard approach is 1cc of ultra-large-molecule filler on the mandible to create the chin tip, plus another 1cc of large-molecule filler to fill in the jawline and the hollow below the lower lip — treat the chin tip, jawline, and hollow below the lip as a trinity, so that others cannot tell you have had filler.

A chin that looks too pointy is not about dosage; it is about placement. If you only inject the chin tip and do not treat the jawline, even just 1cc will still look like an ice cream cone attached to the face. Men have larger skeletal frames and usually need 3cc to blend naturally with the original chin, and the base should be shaped like a trapezoid, not a point.

The direction is also often misunderstood: chin hyaluronic acid pushes the chin forward toward the E-Line, not downward to lengthen it. Lengthening it without thought leads to an awl-shaped face.

Key Points at a Glance

QuestionShort answer
What is chin hyaluronic acid?Using a firmer, large-molecule hyaluronic acid to simulate missing bone, improving a receding chin and facial proportions
How many cc?2cc for mild to moderate recession; 3cc for severe recession or for men. A split of 1cc ultra-large-molecule + 1cc large-molecule is recommended
Where is it injected?3 zones: ① chin tip (on the mandible) ② jawline ③ the hollow between the lip and the chin
Why does it end up looking like a 'snake-spirit' face?Only zone ① is injected and zones ② and ③ are not treated. It is a placement problem, not a dosage problem
Is it done the same way for men and women? No. For men the chin should not be made pointed; a trapezoid base gives a more masculine look, and the dose is usually 3cc
How do I choose a brand?Diamond combination: Juvederm Volux + Voluma; value combination: Xinmei + Honeycomb hyaluronic acid; longest-lasting: Radiesse chin + 1cc hyaluronic acid
How much does it cost?2–3cc about NT$20,000–40,000; Korean brands 2cc about NT$15,000–20,000
How long does it last?Juvederm about 1.5–2 years, Korean brands about 1 year. After half a year, about 50% of the volume is gone
How long is the recovery?Swelling subsides in about 3–5 days, and it fully integrates with the tissue and settles in one month
Does it hurt? The chin has few nerves, so it is relatively low in pain compared with other areas. Bruising fades in about a week
What if it goes wrong or I regret it?Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, which is its biggest advantage over surgery and fat grafting
Will repeated long-term injections cause puffiness?Puffiness mostly appears in the apple cheeks. The chin metabolizes filler quickly because of chewing and talking, so repeat top-ups cause fewer problems

1. What Is Chin Hyaluronic Acid?

Chin hyaluronic acid uses a firmer, large-molecule hyaluronic acid to simulate missing bone and improve a receding chin,

A high proportion of Asians struggle with a receding or too-short chin. The 4 mainstream aesthetic ways to improve the chin right now are: implant surgery, chin fat grafting, chin hyaluronic acid, and Radiesse chin. Most people assume a receding chin can only be fixed with surgery, and few know that chin hyaluronic acid can improve it easily. (Further reading: Receding chin: minimally invasive vs. surgery)

Many people mistakenly think chin hyaluronic acid is injected downward to lengthen the chin. This is wrong. Lengthening the chin without thought looks like an awl-shaped face. The correct way to inject the chin is to bring it forward, closer to the E-Line (aesthetic line), so that the face shape comes closer to the golden ratio.

2. What Are the Results of Chin Hyaluronic Acid?

Chin hyaluronic acid has 3 main treatment effects: improving a receding chin, adjusting facial proportions, and creating a jawline.

(1) Receding chin, short chin

The groom in the picture below is very handsome, with a high nasal root and thick eyebrows and big eyes. His only concern was a receding chin. After 3cc of chin hyaluronic acid, he turned straight into a movie-star face. The aesthetic treatment the most men come to me for is chin hyaluronic acid, because having a jawline matters so much to how a man looks.

No chin

(2) Poor facial proportions

Many people do not know how chin hyaluronic acid improves facial proportions. My wife below is a classic example: after the injection she has an oval face.

My wife with a chin and without a chin look like two different people. So that the princess does not turn back into Cinderella, she insists on getting chin hyaluronic acid every year. In the right picture below she had just had it done this year and still has needle-mark bruising (this is roughly how much bruising to expect after a chin injection).

Whenever her chin hyaluronic acid gradually fades, my sharp-eyed aesthetic doctor friends notice at gatherings, and their first greeting is 'Is your chin gone?' (the whole group starts showing their occupational habit XD). This shows how much the chin affects a person's overall features.

How long chin hyaluronic acid lasts

(3) Undefined jawline

Many of the clients who come to me for chin hyaluronic acid are brides about to take wedding photos or models about to shoot. In wedding photography or professional shoots, a jawline is hard to create through retouching, so chin hyaluronic acid can create an attractive jawline and make photos look better on camera.

Creating a V-shaped face and making the face look smaller through chin hyaluronic acid should be the soul of chin hyaluronic acid treatment. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then the soul of the face is definitely the chin. A good-looking chin (oval face, V-shaped face) is the king of all; if the chin is too short, even if every other feature is good-looking, the face as a whole still has a hard time looking refined.

Many people do not realize that what they lack is a chin. In my consulting room I always explain in detail how important the chin is. After the injection, clients usually pick up a mirror and marvel that this is what they look like with a chin. The woman in the picture below was already a 90-point beauty, and after chin hyaluronic acid I saw her beaming, charmed by herself — everyone should experience that feeling. Jawline

3. How Many cc of Hyaluronic Acid for the Chin?

The direct answer: Depending on how far the chin recedes, 2–3cc of chin hyaluronic acid is recommended for the best and most natural result. A chin that looks too pointy has little to do with dosage; if it is placed wrongly, even 1cc will still look fake. Men have larger skeletal frames than women, and many men need 3cc to blend perfectly with their original chin.

Women · mild to moderate recession2cc1cc ultra-large-molecule for the chin tip + 1cc large-molecule for the jawline and the hollow below the lipThe most common combination
Women · severe recession3ccAdd another 1cc on top of 2cc to build up chin volumeFor those with obvious recession and a very short chin
MenUsually 3ccShape the base like a trapezoid, do not make it pointedLarger skeletal frame; an insufficient dose will not blend in
Just want to test the watersOnly 1cc is not recommendedInjecting only the chin tip looks like an ice cream cone attached to the faceThe first time, it is easy to feel it looks unnatural
Has had chin implant surgery1–2cc depending on the caseMainly fill zone ②, the jawlineSurgery makes it hard to create a natural jawline

Depending on how far the chin recedes, 2–3cc of chin hyaluronic acid is recommended for the best and most natural result.

What I hear most often in consultations is, 'Dr. Ou, I don't want my chin too pointy. Can I just get 1cc?' In fact, a chin that looks too pointy has little to do with dosage. If it is placed wrongly, even 1cc will look fake and pointy. The reason is that the hyaluronic acid is only placed at the chin tip and the jawline is not refined, so it looks like an ice cream cone, as if the chin was forcibly attached to the face.

While watching a drama at home, I saw the side profile of a certain actress (picture below). You can clearly see that the connection to the jawline was not done, and when she makes expressions there is a strange hollow at the side. This is the kind of mess that happens if chin hyaluronic acid is only placed at the chin tip.

Failed chin hyaluronic acid

Men's skeletal frames are usually much larger than women's, and many men usually need 3cc of chin hyaluronic acid to blend perfectly with their original chin.

A man's chin cannot be injected the way a woman's is. A man's chin must not be made pointed, or it will lack masculinity. For a man, the main goal is to bring the receding part of the chin forward, and the base is best shaped like a trapezoid, which looks more masculine.

The picture below shows the change after I gave a friend chin hyaluronic acid (published with his consent). His features are handsome (and, importantly, he has a great personality). After the injection, although his face did not change, having a jawline quietly made him more handsome; the jawline becomes more visible, and the face visually seems smaller.

4. How to Inject Chin Hyaluronic Acid Naturally? The 3 Key Zones

The direct answer: the chin tip, the jawline, and the hollow between the lip and the chin — these three zones must be treated together. Injecting only the chin tip is the entry-level approach and almost never goes wrong, but it will also almost certainly be noticed.

The most common way chin hyaluronic acid fails: it is not natural enough and looks like a 'snake-spirit' face

Often when someone walks into my clinic, the first thing I say is, 'You've had chin hyaluronic acid before, right?' If the jawline at the side was not done well, I can tell at a glance that the chin was injected.

The key points of injecting chin hyaluronic acid: the chin tip, the jawline, and the hollow between the chin and the lip. All three must be treated together to look natural.

The 3 key zones compared

ZoneLocationPurposeIf not treated, you getSuggested material
Zone ①On the mandible, the chin tipCreates the projection of the chin, closer to the E-Line— (this is what everyone starts with)Ultra-large-molecule: Volux, Radiesse
Zone ②The jawlineConnects the chin tip to the angle of the jaw in one lineAn awl-shaped or 'snake-spirit' face; the profile shows it has been doneLarge-molecule: Voluma, Honeycomb hyaluronic acid
Zone ③The hollow between the lower lip and the chinMakes the chin look naturalA hole under the lip when making expressionsLarge-molecule or medium-to-large-molecule

So I usually inject 2cc of chin hyaluronic acid: 1cc of ultra-large-molecule (Volux, Radiesse) on the mandible in zone 1 of the picture below to create the chin tip, and 1cc of large-molecule (Voluma, Honeycomb hyaluronic acid) to fill the hollows in zones 2 and 3 of the picture, so that others will not discover your chin was injected!

Of course, for cases with very severe chin recession, 3cc of chin hyaluronic acid is usually needed to build up the volume of the chin.

How many cc of chin hyaluronic acid

The most entry-level doctors usually inject only zone 1, which almost never goes wrong. Where experts in chin hyaluronic acid show their skill is zones 2 and 3, and this is the key to making the chin refined and not noticeable.

If zone 2, the jawline, is not injected, it easily turns into an awl-shaped or 'snake-spirit' face. In particular, although implant surgery can create a very long-lasting chin tip, it is hard to create a natural jawline. I can always tell from the side profile that someone has had surgery, so quite a few clients have hyaluronic acid injected after implant surgery specifically to refine zone 2, the jawline.

Zone 3 is the hollow between the lip and the chin. If only the chin tip is injected, this hollow becomes even more obvious, and looks very much like Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter, with a piece missing in the middle.

Failed chin hyaluronic acid

The picture below shows an actress whose chin netizens noticed looked unnatural. This usually happens when an implant or filler was used but the hollow in zone 3 was not treated, so that a hole appears under the lip when making expressions. This area has to be refined for the chin to look like her own.

Regretting chin hyaluronic acid

Why these three zones must be injected together, and the anatomical location and needle depth of each, are written up more fully in Chin Injection Needs All Three: Chin Tip, Jawline, and the Hollow Above the Chin Must Be Solved Together.

5. Chin Hyaluronic Acid Brand Recommendations: 3 Combinations

The most recommended approach for chin hyaluronic acid is 1cc for the chin tip and 1cc for the jawline, so the best combination is 1cc ultra-large-molecule + 1cc large-molecule hyaluronic acid.

In terms of formulation, the chin tip can use the firmest hyaluronic acid formulation to increase the firmness of the chin, but for the jawline and the hollow below the lip I recommend large-molecule or medium-to-large-molecule so that it is not too firm; otherwise the jawline will feel more like a foreign body to the touch.

(1) Diamond combination: Juvederm chin

Five years ago Juvederm Volux was not yet on the market, and the biggest problem with a Juvederm chin then was that it was not firm enough. The large-molecule Voluma still could not be as hard as bone. It was not until Juvederm Volux officially entered Taiwan in 2021 that a Juvederm chin could be done better. According to overseas studies, Volux can last 18–24 months, with very good performance in both support and longevity.

Juvederm Volux + Juvederm Voluma (Volux is very elastic and integrates well with tissue as the expressions and muscles move, so it is not easy to tell that chin hyaluronic acid has been injected)

In the picture below, after our nurse had 1cc of Juvederm Volux injected, she went from a cute look to an elegant beauty!

(2) Value combination: Korean hyaluronic acid

If it is your first time getting chin hyaluronic acid and you want to test the waters, I recommend Xinmei hyaluronic acid + EPTQ Honeycomb hyaluronic acid

Because the chin needs a larger dose, and cases with more severe recession usually need 3cc, I sometimes have to think a long time about the cost of Juvederm chin hyaluronic acid. As more and more Korean hyaluronic acid brands emerge, they offer chin hyaluronic acid at more affordable prices. The result looks just as natural; the only difference is that the duration, about 12 months, is somewhat shorter than Juvederm.

The young woman in her 20s in the picture below is a case with fairly obvious chin recession. She had a total of 3cc of Korean hyaluronic acid (1cc Xinmei hyaluronic acid + 2cc Honeycomb hyaluronic acid)

(3) Longest-lasting combination: Radiesse chin + 1cc hyaluronic acid

Radiesse chin (a 'regenerative injection') is a collagen stimulator that lasts longer than hyaluronic acid. It is firmer than all hyaluronic acids, so it can create a more bony, three-dimensional chin, and is very suitable for cases with more severe bony recession that need a material with higher support.

Why add another 1cc of chin hyaluronic acid? The main reason is that Radiesse is really too firm, and I do not recommend injecting it undiluted, because it easily feels too much like a foreign body.

When I attended the 2025 Radiesse (regenerative injection) seminar not long ago, many experts' experiences mentioned that the best ratio for Radiesse is to dilute it by mixing with hyaluronic acid. After mixing, you keep the longevity of Radiesse together with the spreadability of hyaluronic acid, a perfect pairing. If you want better duration, I highly recommend Radiesse chin + chin hyaluronic acid.

6. How Long Does Chin Hyaluronic Acid Last?

Compared with surgery, chin hyaluronic acid can look more natural and less noticeable, and has relatively fewer after-effects, but its biggest drawback is its short duration. Juvederm chin hyaluronic acid usually lasts 1.5–2 years, and Korean hyaluronic acid chins usually last 1 year.

MaterialDurationMetabolism
Western brands such as Juvederm / Restylane / TeosyalAbout 1.5–2 yearsNewer cross-linking technology, linear decline
Korean hyaluronic acid (Xinmei, Honeycomb, etc.)About 1 yearAffordable price, shorter duration
Radiesse chin + hyaluronic acidLonger than hyaluronic acid aloneBalances longevity and spreadability
Volume after half a yearAbout 50% remainingCan be topped up in stages according to your own metabolism

(1) How often should chin hyaluronic acid be injected?

Chin hyaluronic acid can be topped up at any time depending on how much firmness each person wants. Chin hyaluronic acid disappears in a linear process; although it can last more than a year, usually about 50% of the volume may be gone after half a year, and it can be topped up according to your own metabolism. For example, my wife currently tops up 1cc a year to maintain the firmness of her chin.

(2) What happens with long-term chin hyaluronic acid?

The problem of puffiness from repeated hyaluronic acid filling usually occurs in the apple cheeks. Because the chin is used every day for eating, talking, and moving, it is an area that metabolizes quickly, so repeated top-ups are unlikely to have any side effects.

7. Chin Hyaluronic Acid Price

Chin hyaluronic acid usually needs 2–3cc, and depending on the brand, the cost of chin hyaluronic acid usually falls between NT$20,000 and NT$40,000.

8. Aftercare for Chin Hyaluronic Acid

The direct answer: recovery from chin hyaluronic acid takes about 3–5 days, and it fully integrates with the tissue and settles in about a month. For the first few days it swells because the hyaluronic acid absorbs water, and it is normal to feel the chin has become very big; the volume becomes much smaller after the swelling subsides.

Post-treatment timeline

TimeWhat happensWhat to do
Day of treatment to day 3Obvious swelling, possible needle-mark bruisingNormal; apply ice packs
Days 3–5Swelling begins to subsideBruising fades naturally within about a week
Week 1The large-molecule hyaluronic acid feels more like a foreign bodyDon't keep pinching or pressing it
Month 1Gradually integrates with the tissueAvoid vigorous massage and wait for it to settle
After 1 monthYou can hardly feel the hyaluronic acidLive normally; you can start to assess whether fine-tuning is needed

A few frequently asked points

  • Does it hurt? The chin itself has almost no nerves. Combined with an extremely fine local anesthetic needle and hyaluronic acid mixed with anesthetic, it is relatively low in pain compared with other areas.
  • Will it bruise? The chin can only be injected with a sharp needle, and there are many small blood vessels, so some bruising is possible; it usually fades naturally in about a week.
  • Is it safe? The chin has no major arteries (you only need to precisely avoid the submental artery), the hyaluronic acid is placed on the periosteum of the mandible, and the blood vessels run in the superficial fat, far away, so it is relatively safer than other areas.
  • Will it be deformed if bumped? The hyaluronic acid is placed under the muscle, so a bump will not deform it; within the first month, don't knead it or press hard for no reason, and it basically does not shift easily.
  • What if I regret it? Chin surgery and fat grafting cannot be undone, while hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. This is also why I suggest that people thinking about surgery try hyaluronic acid first to 'simulate' it.

The direct answer: a chin done with hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with hyaluronidase and redone, which is its biggest advantage over surgery and fat grafting. Common situations and how to approach them:

Chin Hyaluronic Acid FAQ

How much does chin hyaluronic acid cost?

Chin hyaluronic acid usually needs 2–3cc, and depending on the brand the cost usually falls between NT$20,000 and NT$40,000. A Korean hyaluronic acid chin for mild recession at 2cc is about NT$15,000–20,000, and a Juvederm chin about NT$25,000–30,000.

How long does chin hyaluronic acid last?

Juvederm chin hyaluronic acid usually lasts 1.5–2 years, and Korean hyaluronic acid chins usually last 1 year. It disappears in a linear process; usually about 50% of the volume may be gone after half a year, and it can be topped up according to your own metabolism.

How can I avoid a failed chin hyaluronic acid result?

The most common failure is that it is not natural enough and looks like a 'snake-spirit' face. The key points of injection are the chin tip, the jawline, and the hollow between the chin and the lip; all three must be treated together to look natural.

How do I choose a chin hyaluronic acid brand?

The most recommended combination is 1cc ultra-large-molecule for the chin tip + 1cc large-molecule for the jawline. The diamond combination is Juvederm Volux + Voluma; for value, choose Xinmei hyaluronic acid + EPTQ Honeycomb hyaluronic acid; for the longest-lasting, choose Radiesse chin + 1cc hyaluronic acid.

What happens with long-term chin hyaluronic acid?

The problem of puffiness from repeated hyaluronic acid filling usually occurs in the apple cheeks. Because the chin is used every day for eating, talking, and moving, it is an area that metabolizes quickly, so repeated top-ups are unlikely to have any side effects.

How long is the recovery for a hyaluronic acid chin? Will it be very swollen afterward?

Recovery from chin hyaluronic acid is usually 3–5 days. The hyaluronic acid absorbs water and causes swelling, so if the chin feels very big in the first few days after the injection, don't worry too much; the volume usually becomes much smaller after the swelling subsides in about a week.

How long does a hyaluronic acid chin take to settle?

Chin hyaluronic acid usually fully integrates with the tissue in about a month. Because large-molecule hyaluronic acid is firm, the foreign-body feeling is more noticeable in the first week after the injection, and after a month you can hardly feel the hyaluronic acid.
I suggest not fiddling with it by pinching or massaging it hard in the first month; just wait a month and it will settle.

Does chin hyaluronic acid hurt?

The chin itself has almost no nerves, so even if a novice doctor does a poor job, there is hardly any pain. With an extremely fine local anesthetic needle, hyaluronic acid mixed with anesthetic, and similar methods, chin hyaluronic acid is the least painful of all areas.

What if I regret chin hyaluronic acid?

Chin surgery or chin fat grafting cannot be undone once done, so before surgery I suggest the most conservative step of first injecting chin hyaluronic acid to simulate how you look with a chin. Some people may regret the change in style after the injection (they might have had a cute look that turns elegant), but at least chin hyaluronic acid can be dissolved if you regret it.

Is chin hyaluronic acid safe?

Chin hyaluronic acid is a relatively safe area among all hyaluronic acid injections. The chin has no major arteries (only the artery at the side of the chin (submental artery) needs to be precisely avoided when inserting the needle), so safety is much higher than for the tear trough, forehead, or nasal root, and even if you regret chin hyaluronic acid it is easy to dissolve.
During injection the hyaluronic acid should be placed on the periosteum of the mandible. The blood vessels of the chin run in the superficial fat, a good distance from the mandible, so when injecting while pressing against the bone it is almost impossible to inject hyaluronic acid into a blood vessel.

What happens if a hyaluronic acid chin is bumped?

Chin hyaluronic acid is usually placed under the muscle, so just a bump will not deform it. Within the first month, don't keep kneading it or pressing hard for no reason, and it basically does not shift easily.

Will a hyaluronic acid chin bruise?

Chin hyaluronic acid can only be injected with a sharp needle, and the chin has many small blood vessels, so there is some chance of bruising. There is no need to worry too much; it usually fades naturally in about a week.

How many cc of chin hyaluronic acid is enough?

It depends on how far the chin recedes. For women with mild to moderate recession, 2cc is recommended (1cc ultra-large-molecule for the chin tip + 1cc large-molecule for the jawline and the hollow below the lip); for severe recession or men, 3cc is usually needed. Injecting only 1cc the first time is not recommended, because treating only the chin tip without connecting the jawline easily feels unnatural.

How is chin hyaluronic acid different for men and women?

Men have larger skeletal frames than women and usually need 3cc to blend perfectly with the original chin. The technique is also different: a man's chin must not be made pointed, or it will lack masculinity. The main goal is to bring the receding part forward, and shaping the base like a trapezoid looks masculine.

How do I choose between chin hyaluronic acid, Radiesse, and Ellanse?

The advantage of hyaluronic acid is that it can be dissolved, so regret is reversible; Radiesse and Ellanse are collagen stimulators with better support and longevity, but cannot be dissolved. For those with severe bony recession who need high support, you can consider Radiesse chin 1.5cc diluted with 1cc of hyaluronic acid, balancing longevity and spreadability.

Can I eat right after chin hyaluronic acid?

You can eat normally. Because the chin chews and talks every day, it is an area that metabolizes relatively quickly, but in the first month avoid pressing hard on or massaging the area, and wait until it fully integrates with the tissue.
